Description

First World War I (1914 - 1918)

Lest we Forget’ is the motto of many war monuments that commemorate the victims of the First World War.

In four years of battle some 65 million soldiers were active in the various armies, and about 10 million got killed. More millions even had to live on with physical problems, or suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

English literature of this Great War - as they would call it at the time - reflects the mood of the war: At the outbreak it is almost triumphant; there is a mood of patriotism, optimism and readiness to face the future. As it moves on, and develops into trench warfare, the reality of the horrendous killing and suffering leads to a new way of writing. The poets who are continuously facing death and bloodshed protest against the sort of war they are fighting.

Readers have always been impressed and fascinated by the underlying emotions of the literature of this war, which has never been surpassed by the literature of any later war.

The words of the war poets seem to touch our deeper feelings as well.
